All terriers, except for the fighting dogs, such as the American Staffordshire Terrier, were originally bred to hunt and kill different types vermin, with many of the early ancestors having to procure their own food on farms! This initial breeding endeavor produced dogs with great enthusiasm for their work, but that tend to be intolerant of other animals, particularly smaller animals! Most also display an intolerance of other dogs as well, though sometimes, if a great deal of socialization is done when they are young, some dogs can learn to tolerate other animals.

It is often course, but still soft to the touch and groomers must employ a special grooming technique called “stripping” in order to keep it in tip-top condition, like what might be seen on an attractive show dog. Dogs like the Welsh Terrier and Lakeland Terriers often have their fur cut rather short over their bodies, with a longer, feathery look on the legs and a distinctive “beard” on the muzzle. Although each different breed has its own distinguishing characteristics, all breeds of terrier can be charismatic and engaging pets. Lively and happy, terriers tend to make upbeat and enlivening companions! They usually have a great willingness to learn and, to a larger degree, to work. However, they can also be assertive, audacious, and bold as well and they will need a determined owner and trainer who has the patience to help them blossom into confident, poised, and well behaved dogs.
