 How to Clean Pet Urine

When Panda, my 3-year-old Samoyed, first became a member of my family as a puppy, she was an adorable, white ball of fluff who, despite her good looks, left a wet and smelly calling card! As we went through the woes of potty training, she would often make mistakes along the way – on my otherwise pristine carpet! After conventional methods failed to remove the odor and sometimes the stain, I decided it was time to find a truly reliable pet urine remover to save my carpet and headed off to the pet store.

When I identified myself as a new puppy owner looking for a solution to Panda’s little accidents, a friendly sales person took me to the aisle where the pet urine cleaners were displayed and explained to me why conventional cleaners don’t do the job – simply put, they are not designed to properly clean up pet urine! Any products that contain ammonia as a cleaning ingredient will only exacerbate the problem, as ammonia is the main ingredient of pet urine that smells foul and many products, with or without ammonia, are only able to remove part of the mess and often leave a residue behind that picks up more dirt and bad smells! The best bet is to use a pet urine cleaner specifically designed to remove pet urine.

It should also be noted that pet urine contains an important component called pheromones. Pheromones are like tiny information packets contained in the urine that tell other animals what type of animal deposited them, how long ago, and more. This is important for wild dogs because, since puppies are naturally inclined to eliminate where other dogs already have, it teaches them where the appropriate places to urinate are. So every time Panda made a mistake in the house, she left behind a pheromone message, marking that particular area as an acceptable place to eliminate and regular cleaners are not made to clean up those pheromones!

When you use a pet urine remover, however, it not only removes the urine, including the ammonia, and with it, the smell, but it also removes the pheromones, reestablishing the area as an off limits zone for elimination! It does this by trapping the molecules and evaporating them away as the area dries, leaving the carpet fresh and as good as new!

The pet sore sales person pointed out several brands to me while I was there and I experimented with most of them. The one that I thought yielded the best results was called Nature’s Miracle Stain and Odor Remover and I liked it because it uses all natural ingredients and is non-toxic, so I felt safe using it around baby Panda.

Panda and I did get through our potty training trials and using the pet urine remover definitely helped me to keep my carpet and my sanity in tact!
